“What do I wear for my Senior Session?” This is a comment I think EVERYONE asks themselves before their session. Â Probably even before your schedule your Senior Portraits. Why? Because let’s face it, what you wear is the best way to express yourselves in photos. Yes, there are ways to get your personality in there & showcase some hobbies, but what you choose to wear for your Senior Portraits need to showcase YOU! They need to fit well (and my version of “fit well” may be different then yours which is why there’s a chance pins will be used to fit things correctly, lol), be a color & pattern that work with your hair & skin tone as well as be a style that suits you & your personality.
Accessories, shoes, etc.. are all ways to even add more of you to the look. There are MANY ways to figure out what to wear. Check magazines, local stores & of course Pintrest. Now, all the girls know about Pintrest & I would be surprised if any of the guys out there are even reading this, but I will cover a few looks for both just in case. 😉 So here’s a shot of MY Pintrest Board for Seniors (you can follow it here):
As some of you know I have written about the wonders of Pintrest before.( If you’d like you can read them here and here) This is not that. It’s about finding your style, pairing colors, etc… Â First, locations. Why? Certain locations look better with certain colors & styles. Choose your location & start from there. Based on the colors of the backgrounds, etc… you can choose colors what would flatter both you & your surroundings. For example, at the beach. Many people wear all white…..Is that the best? Actually it depends. If you’re shooting at sunrise or Sunset over the water when you can get all the colors of the sky in the background it can work. If you are shooting mid-day or some other time when the background will go mostly white, no. Because you in your white dress or shirt might blend in with the background. Not good right? Â Wanting a woodsy feel? Green trees & green grass? Probably not best to wear the same color green as your surroundings…..Get the point?
What about patterns? It’s true certain patterns are more flattering & certain patterns look a little wonky on camera. Vertical stripes for instance. If they are large, great. If they are thin & tiny they sometimes take on a little disco effect with the light reflecting off them in the camera. Large prints? Fine on one aspect of your outfit. Multiple prints all over every piece of your outfit? No (I hope that’s a given).
When I book I set up Pintrest boards with my Seniors who also are Pintrest users so we can share ideas. I also offer to review outfits via texts, emails or even Skype. Even then I tell my Seniors to bring ALOT of clothes. Why? So we can go through them all. I may put together outfits that you didn’t think of knowing exactly where I am shooting, the colors there, etc…
Also, unless the wording on your shirt expresses you, I say stay away from words. No need to advertise for Abercrombie, Aeropostal, etc… they have a large advertising budget. 🙂
So in a nutshell when trying to answer the question, “What do I wear for my senior session?” Think of three things. 1) Your style; 2) Your location & 3) colors & prints that flatter both. Â Answer all three of those & you will be rocking your session!
